The Internet is no longer an untapped resource for business owners, as it has been in the past. Competition is extremely heavy in most industries, and now seems like just about every small business has a website. Those early days of being successful online simply because a company was one of a few in their niche with a website are long, long gone.
With so much competition online already and more coming daily, how can a small businesses adapt?
Every business operates differently to achieve their goals and each will have their own budget and strategy for dealing with the rapidly increasing competition. The one strategy that I believe every small business should consider when dealing with online competition is search engine optimization.

Here are a few of the SEO achievements from the campaign. Most of the terms targeted were national, such as Hand Surgeon and Hand Surgery, this was about 4-5 months of work.
Whats really important is the “on-site” SEO that is done before the site is even launched. Often times this doesn’t happen but if you can remember a few key elements it will help you out tremendously. If your website isn’t built in a way the search engines can read the contents then you aren’t going to rank at all. There are certain standards for web development and most programers are really good at what they do but, the developers make the website functional… add navigation, add pages, products, interactive video, sign up forms etc.
SEO has to come in and find a way to let the search engines know what each element is within the contents of each web page of the website. This can be everything from the navigational bar down to the footer, each element can be tagged in a way the search engines can find it, index it and then display the page if relevant to a query made in a search box. Both schools complement each other but creating code and building websites is an art in itself and Search Engine Optimization is something completely different.

That screen shot is a year old and I havent touched it since. Below is where he currently stands. A year later and he still takes positions 2, 3, 4 and 5 for some of his terms… there is even a little plus button provided by Google to see what else my client has to offer, thats the real power and value of good SEO.
